Welcome to Kusadasi
Spring in Kusadasi has reached its peak this week. The hillsides are covered in red poppies and yellow daisies while the air in the town center carries the heavy scent of blooming jasmine. This is the sweet spot for visitors before the intense heat of July arrives. You can walk the marble streets of Ephesus comfortably and the cafe terraces along the waterfront are lively but not yet overcrowded.
Of course the local scenery is currently being upstaged by our very own political theater. We must offer a warm round of applause for the recent arrest of our Mayor, Ömer Günel. It appears the ongoing trend of sidelining successful opposition figures has finally reached our shores. Following the high profile detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, it seems that being a prominent member of the CHP is now considered a high risk hobby. We are particularly moved by the profound silence from the European Union on the matter. Their ability to maintain such selective concern for democratic values while enjoying our Aegean views is truly impressive. It is comforting to know that as long as the sun shines and the olives are served, the occasional arrest of an elected official is merely a minor detail in the grander scheme of diplomacy.

This Week in Kusadasi
What's Happening: Tuesday, May 19 is a major national holiday in Turkey: the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. Expect to see the town draped in Turkish flags and a parade of students and sports teams through the main harbor road. Banks and government offices will be closed on Tuesday but most shops and restaurants will remain open to cater to the holiday crowds.
Turkey Travel Update: The Turkish lira continues to see significant volatility. As of Monday morning, the exchange rate sits at approximately 45.50 TRY to 1 USD and 49.30 TRY to 1 EUR. Most local businesses now prefer credit cards for larger purchases, though carrying small amounts of cash for dolmus (minibus) fares and market stalls is essential.
Port & Cruise News: Ege Port is busy this week with several luxury and mega-ships scheduled to dock. For those arriving by sea, the terminal is located directly in the heart of the town. You can walk to the Grand Bazaar in less than five minutes or take a ten-minute stroll to Pigeon Island. If you have a short port stay, prioritize a private tour of Ephesus to maximize your time.
Where to Eat This Week
With the sea temperatures rising, our focus this week is on Aegean Seafood. Kusadasi has a long history as a fishing village and these three spots represent the best of our local catch.
- Mezgit Restaurant - Setur Marina. Order the grilled sea bass or the octopus salad. This spot is famous for its high quality meze selection and its sophisticated setting overlooking the yachts in the marina.
- Kazim Usta - Old Port. This is a local institution that has been serving fresh fish for decades. Ask for the catch of the day and enjoy the classic harbor atmosphere where the service is as reliable as the view.
- Ferah Balik - Harbor Area. This restaurant offers one of the best sunset views in town. It is the perfect place for a slow dinner of hot calamari and cold raki as you watch the cruise ships depart.
