Kusadasi Dolmuş Guide: Routes, Fares, and How to Use Them
Want to travel around Kusadasi like a local, save money, and get almost anywhere you need to go? Then you need to master the art of the dolmuş!
A dolmuş (pronounced dol-moosh) is a shared minibus that operates on set routes. It's the most common and cheapest form of public transport in Kusadasi. It might seem intimidating at first, but this guide will make you a dolmuş pro in no time.
How to Use the Dolmuş: A 5-Step Guide
- Find a Stop: Look for blue signs with a white "D" on them. Honestly, though, you can often just stand on the route and wave one down as it approaches.
- Check the Sign: Each dolmuş has a sign in the front window listing its final destination and key stops along the way (e.g., "SAHİL SİTELERİ"or "KADINLAR DENİZİ").
- Get On & Pay: Hop on and find a seat. Pass your fare forward to the driver. It's helpful to have small notes or coins. The driver or other passengers will pass your change back to you.
- Enjoy the Ride: The dolmuş will stop frequently to let people on and off.
- Getting Off: When you are approaching your stop, get the driver's attention by saying "İnecek var!" (in-eh-jek var), which means "someone wants to get off."
Key Dolmuş Routes
The main dolmuş station is in the town centre, near the mosque and main taxi rank. All routes start and end here.
Route #5: Ladies Beach (Kadınlar Denizi)
- Sign to look for: "KADINLAR DENİZİ"
- This is the one for: The most famous beach in Kusadasi. It's a short, 10-minute ride from the town centre. This is one of the most frequent services.
Route #6: Long Beach (Uzun Plaj) / Shopping Malls
- Sign to look for: "SAHİL SİTELERİ" (This means "Beach Sites," which is the area along Long Beach)
- This is the one for: Reaching the long stretch of beach south of the town, home to many large hotels, beach clubs, and the Aqua Fantasy water park. It also passes the Kipa AVM shopping centre.
Route to Selçuk (for Ephesus)
- Sign to look for: "SELÇUK"
- This is the one for: Visiting the ancient city of Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary, and the charming village of Şirince (you'll need to take a separate dolmuş from Selçuk to Şirince). These minibuses are slightly larger and leave from the main Otogar (bus station).
Understanding Fares & Etiquette
- Fares: Fares are incredibly cheap. A ride within the town (e.g., to Ladies Beach) will cost around 1 Euro. Longer journeys like to Selçuk will cost more. The price is fixed per person.
- Cash is King: You must pay in Turkish Lira cash.
- Don't Be Shy: If you're unsure, just ask the driver "Ladies Beach?" and they will nod or point you to the right dolmuş.
- Offer Seats: It's customary to offer your seat to elderly passengers if the bus is full.
Using the dolmuş is a small adventure in itself and a fantastic way to experience a piece of daily Turkish life. Give it a try!
